Our place-based academic programs include collaboratively-designed faculty-led courses, immersive long programs, internships, Spanish language, virtual programming, and a menu of presentations and activities. Our academic programs are unique thanks to their interface with MVI’s community relationships, on-going projects, and research.
The Monteverde Institute is a non-profit educational organization founded in 1986 in Monteverde, Costa Rica, to guide the increased tourism in a sustainable way by integrating academic programs, research, and community initiatives into programs to benefit both visitors and the local community.
The MVI 38-acre campus forms part of the famous Monteverde Reserve Complex, an area of natural preserves that protect more than 65,000 acres of endangered tropical forest. This location underlines the importance of MVI’s commitment to sustainability.
We work with the Monteverde community, local organizations, government institutions and grassroots groups, so they can identify the main issues in the zone and work with us in order to create new solutions with our different programs.

Since 1986 the Monteverde Institute has hosted students to learn, research, and contribute to the well-being of the people and environment of the area. All profits above expenses go directly to community programs.

Our unique campus provides space for academic and community partners to learn, teach, gather, reflect, and create. Prototype solutions to local sustainability challenges lessen the environmental impact of our operations, inspire visitors, and provide replicable examples for local implementation.
Community connections, decades of experience, and the unique natural environment are the foundation for our collaboratively-designed, place-based, experiential academic programs.
